FAQ

Straight answers.

Can I order a HomeFón today?

HomeFón is currently out of stock, with the next arrival date still to be confirmed. Reserving your place costs nothing. Once you confirm your email, we’ll contact you in reservation order when ordering opens. There’s no obligation to buy.

How much does HomeFón cost?

€360, which includes the Samsung phone set up as your HomeFón, a stand and case, the SIM, your first year of service and An Post registered delivery within Ireland. The price after the first year is not set yet. Reserving your place is free, and you only pay if you choose to order.

What's in the HomeFón package?

A Samsung phone set up as your HomeFón, a stand and case, and a SIM with an Irish mobile number. You also get the parent dashboard, where you manage your HomeFón and your account.

How quickly will my HomeFón arrive?

We post it by An Post registered post within 3 working days of your order. We deliver only within the Republic of Ireland, and someone may need to sign for it.

What if I change my mind?

You have 14 days from the day your HomeFón arrives to cancel, for any reason. Email us and we’ll send you a free return label, so posting it back costs you nothing. We refund everything you paid, first year of service included. You can unbox it, set it up and try it first, as you would in a shop. The terms of sale on our Legal page set out the details.

What if something is wrong with my HomeFón?

If something is wrong within 30 days of delivery, you can reject it and get a full refund. After that, we repair or replace it at no cost to you, and if that doesn’t put it right, you can have a refund or a price reduction. Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 apply in full.

Can we use our own SIM or family mobile plan?

Yes. You can swap in a compatible SIM from another network, including a family plan, a work plan or a discounted deal. If you choose pay as you go, look for a generous text allowance, and check MMS availability and charges if you want standard group texts, which also need mobile data. We supply and test on Tesco Mobile’s base pay-as-you-go plan, and you can ask Tesco Mobile about upgrading it. On another network, the dashboard can’t read the phone’s credit or link you to top up.

Can my child send texts on HomeFón?

Yes. HomeFón has messaging built in. Your child can text the contacts you approve, using the same allowlist, quiet times, and lock as calling. The other person just uses ordinary texting, with nothing to install on their end. Texts from numbers you haven't approved are never shown to your child; they're held for you to review in case they matter.

Can my child be in group chats?

Yes, small ones. Your child can take part in group texts of up to 5 people including them, but only when every person in the group is a contact you've approved for messaging.

Can my child message their friends without using SMS / MMS?

Yes, when the friend's family also has a HomeFón. HomeFón has a second, internet-based messaging system for linked HomeFón families. It's free on Wi-Fi; without Wi-Fi it uses a little mobile data, with no per-message charge. A text sent when either phone has no internet is charged like any text.

What about photos and videos in messages?

Photos and videos received in messages are not shown to your child. They're held, encrypted, in your dashboard for you.

What is GoFón?

GoFón is for when someone needs a phone outside the house. It means your HomeFón works away from home: you shape how the phone works while it is out, and it goes back to its home settings when the time is up.

Does GoFón track where my child is?

No. HomeFón does not collect your child's location on a trip or at any other time.

Can my child spend money on a GoFón trip?

No. GoFón adds no payment features, and there is nothing on the phone to buy with.

Does HomeFón read my child's messages?

No, the default setting is that messages are not stored or read. Parents can turn message saving on. When Message saving is on messages are then saved in the parent dashboard.

Why does HomeFón need a phone of its own?

So the rules hold. During set-up, HomeFón becomes the phone's whole experience: there is no ordinary home screen underneath for a child to slip back to. That level of protection needs a phone with nothing else on it, which is why every HomeFón arrives set up that way.

What happens if the internet goes down?

The phone keeps enforcing your last synced settings offline, including schedules and the contact list. It re-syncs when it reconnects. Going offline changes nothing about emergency calling either: no HomeFón setting blocks a call to 112 or 999.

What happens after a restart?

HomeFón restarts into the household experience automatically and re-applies your settings. On some manufacturers' phones, battery-saving features can interfere; that's why HomeFón comes on a model we've tested.

Can a co-parent help manage it?

Yes. You can invite one other parent, who may live in a different home. Each of you has your own login, and you both manage everything equally.

Is it GDPR compliant?

It is built with GDPR, privacy by design, data minimisation and guidance on children's data in mind. You can export your data or delete your account from the dashboard at any time, and our privacy notice sets out what we collect, why, and how long we keep it.

Known limitations

What HomeFón can’t do, or doesn’t do yet. Worth reading before you decide.

  • It needs a phone of its own. The rules are only fully enforced on a phone set up for HomeFón and nothing else, which is how the package arrives. Set up any other way, they become strong suggestions rather than enforced limits.
  • Android only. HomeFón runs on the Android phone in the package and can’t be put on an iPhone. The parent dashboard is a website, so you can manage it from any browser, on an iPhone or anything else.
  • Calls and messages only. Your child can call and text the people you approve. There is no browser, and WhatsApp and other apps can’t be added.
  • Group texts need mobile data and can cost more. Texts to one person are ordinary SMS. Group texts, up to 5 people including your child, are group MMS. Group MMS needs mobile data on, costs more than ordinary texts on prepay, and, like all MMS, can occasionally be slow or fail silently on some networks. What it costs depends on your carrier and plan, and we confirm the figure with you before you start. RCS, the chat features in Google Messages, isn’t available to apps like ours.
  • Your child doesn’t see photos or videos. Any that arrive in a message are held, encrypted in your dashboard, and removed after 30 days.
  • HomeFón-to-HomeFón chats have limits of their own. They work only between families who have both approved a link, and are text-only in this version. They’re free on Wi-Fi; without Wi-Fi they use a little mobile data, with no per-message charge. A text sent when either phone has no internet is charged like any text.
  • No location. HomeFón never collects your child’s location, so it can’t show you where a lost phone is. You can lock a lost phone from your dashboard, and the lock lands at its next check-in.
