The experience

Living with a HomeFón.

Asleep until someone needs it.

Most of the day the HomeFón rests in its fixed spot with the screen dark, part of the hallway like the landline was.

When it rings, or when someone taps the screen, it wakes up, ready to call or text.

There's no passcode and nothing to scroll. It does its job and goes back to sleep.

Your child's side

The home screen is the whole phone.

When the phone wakes, your child taps their name at the top to open their inbox. Below are their messages, from the people you've approved. At the bottom, under “In case of emergency”, they can ring their emergency contacts in one tap or make an emergency call. There is nothing else to find, set up or scroll.

When someone calls your HomeFón, it rings, and whoever is nearest picks it up. Only approved people can ring through.

Texts from numbers you haven't approved never reach your child, and neither does any photo or video. They're held in your dashboard for you to see.

The HomeFón home screen

Calling and texting, without the rest.

Asleep: a text waiting for each child, and a missed call
Home: each child’s messages, then the people you approved
Messages: one thread per approved person
Calls: tap a person, then Call
Quiet time: resting, and quiet hours do not block emergency calls

Who they can talk to.

Texting one person

Your child can text any approved contact. The other person just texts back as normal (SMS). On the HomeFón messages can't be forwarded or deleted.

Small group chats

Create group chats with your child and up to four approved contacts. Everyone else receives the conversation as a normal group MMS on their own phone.

HomeFón to HomeFón

When a friend's family also has a HomeFón, the children can message each other over Wi-Fi. Away from Wi-Fi, messages send over mobile data. A text sent when either phone has no internet is charged like any text. Both sets of parents approve the link.

More than one child?

Each child has their own inbox on the one phone, each with their own messages. Texts from a contact you set to one child go to that child. Texts from a contact your children share, like Granny, go to all of them, unless the text starts with one child's tag, like @Aoife. Profiles don't have passwords, so respecting each other's messages is something to agree as a family.

Your side

Change settings easily.

Want a later quiet time on Friday, a new contact, or to set a GoFón trip? Log in to the parent dashboard from any browser, update the setting, and the phone picks it up. You never need to touch the phone itself.

The actual parent dashboard, Contacts page: approved contacts Mum and Dad (both marked Emergency), Granny and Auntie Niamh, with Auntie Niamh opened to show messaging on and Whose messages? set to Aoife
The actual parent dashboard, Rules page: two quiet-time schedules, School nights from 21:00 to 07:30 Sunday to Thursday and Friday from 22:30 to 08:30, marked Enforced
